Altar Servers

Picture1School age children can start serving on the Sanctuary, helping the priests at Mass. It is a great honour and if you would like to us come and see me after Mass or speak to either Fr. Michael or Fr. John.Training is usually spread over 3 weeks during the Summer and then we will help you during Mass after that. If you would like to be an Altar Server, you will have to have received your First Communion. Then you will be able to represent all the people in the Church while helping the priests.

The Children’s Liturgy Group

Childrens LiturgyThe parish has a thriving children’s liturgy group. We hold sessions every Sunday in term time during the 10:30 mass. Children start in mass and are then dismissed by the priest after the opening prayer.

The liturgy group gives children an opportunity to learn about the gospel at their level. We have two groups:

  • Preschool group (for 3-4 year olds). Parents should accompany their children in this session.
  • School age group (for Foundation to Communion aged children). Parents should stay in mass as the children are accompanied by helpers.

Want to get involved in the group as a leader or helper?

  • Leader – you can lead sessions with preschool and/or school age children on a rota basis (typically once every two months). We have lots of resources to help you and can offer mentoring to get you started.
  • Helper – you would help the leader to set up before and support the leader during the session. Full instructions are provided.

Contact Angela Knott on 982 1978 to find out more.

Eucharistic Ministers

Eucharistic MinistersThe Eucharistic Ministry in The Holy Spirit Parish is an active and thriving Ministry. We have 32 active Ministers who help with the distribution of Holy Communion at Masses and take Holy Communion to the sick and housebound. There are a few occasions where you may be asked to do a Eucharistic Service but this is always done by two people. This is a very rewarding Ministry, and if you are interested in joining our team please speak to Fr. Michael or Fr. John. The training consists of a weekend at The Diocesan Centre at The Briars, Crich. After this you are commissioned by The Bishop at The Cathedral.

Music Group- Sunday 9am Mass-

The Choir sings at the 9am Mass and usually provides music for the major feasts such as the Easter Triduum and Christmas Midnight Mass. We are a mixed choir and often sing in four parts but you don’t have to be able to read music or be a brilliant singer – just to enjoy singing! We rehearse on Friday evening from 8pm and new members are always welcome. For more information contact Tony Wheat on 0115 9141012.

Music Group- Sunday 10.30am Mass-
There is a small group of folks who play at the 10.30am mass. It’s very much a ‘play if you can’ group. We have a few regulars but we also welcome occasional players and signers, students back from University, or visitors who know us and like to play now and again.

We welcome musicians of all ability, we feel that between us all, we make a nice sound so the odd wrong chord or note is fine – it all adds to the general harmony. We currently have guitars, flute, recorder, clarinet, but in the past we’ve had trumpets, cells, violins, and keyboards to name a few.

We basically play what we like – old favourites and the odd new one thrown in, but with the emphasis on encouraging all in the congregation to sing. Main contact for the group is John O’Brien.
