MATTERS ARISING FROM THE MINUTES OF THE LAST MEETING.

All Souls Mass – (MD) reported that the refreshments after the 6.30 mass were poorly attended, but felt that it was a worthwhile thing to do. She suggested that next year the opportunity to have refreshments should be mentioned in the letter that is sent out inviting people to attend the mass.

After Mass Rota – (SG) has compiled a rota and passed it around the group for people to fill in empty spaces. He will circulate to all PPC members.

Agenda

Operation Christmas card – (MD) suggested that beneath the card’s greeting to insert details about how to find out more about the Catholic Church and how to contact the Holy Spirit clergy. This was agreed.

She also asked for ideas on how to distribute them effectively. After discussion it was decided that:

PPC greeters will point people in the direction of the lists before and after mass, until 2 wks before Christmas.

Parish building changes – (FG) the building work on the church and the social centre will start after Christmas, and we need to make a decision about where we hold our Mass.

Sunday?

Option 1. The Becket Upper School

Option 2. Keyworth/Cotgrave/Cathedral/Neighbouring parishes.

It was decided that Option 1. The Becket Upper School was the preferred choice and (FG) will liaise with Tony Glover to make the necessary arrangements.

Week days /Baptisms/Funerals/weddings/ to be arranged

Once firm plans have been made (FG) will communicate the details to the parish.

Parish Pastoral Plan Unfortunately(VL) was not present to give feedback so it has been deferred to the next meeting. (FG) to discuss the findings with (VL) before the next meeting. (MD) reported that there will be an ecumenical advent service open to everyone at The Holy Rood, Edwalton on Wed 17th Nov at 8pm.

Renewal of PPC members

(CC) discussed her and (DK’s) proposal (NO: 1) That the majority of the PPC should be nominated representatives of parish groups, with 2/3 elected additional people who are not involved in the parish groups. (CC) also said that if the PPC needed to function without a priest in the parish it would need to be representative of the parish groups, with the addition of 2/3 members from the general mass goers in the parish.

(MD) discussed her proposal (NO: 2). That the whole of the PPC should stand down at a given time and that there should be a number of people possibly 12, who are democratically elected from the parish.

She said that the PPC needs to be clear about its roles and responsibilities and feels that this is not clear. She visualized a PPC from elected parish members working with a link group from the parish groups. Prospective candidates should campaign to be elected and not have too many responsibilities already within the parish.

The above was widely discussed and it was acknowledged that as a PPC we did not have a written plan but that we have developed and coordinated the group well. We have a policy of openness and have a visible presence at the back of Mass each weekend. Together with the process of a three year rotation to the PPC we are trying hard to represent the views and needs of the parish.

The size of the group was then discussed and it was also felt that representative from the parish groups should be on the PPC, as being an active member of a group showed commitment to working for the parish, but that there should also be an opportunity for parishioners not involved in any group to become a member.

How are we going to take it forward?

We had a vote on the two proposals

  1. That the majority of the PPC should be nominated representatives of parish groups, with 2/3 elected additional people who are not involved in the parish groups.
  2. That the whole of the PPC should stand down at a given time and that there should be a number of people possibly 12, who are democratically elected from the parish.

Votes of the 16 members present where as follows:

Proposal (1) = 12 votes (passed)

Proposal (2) = 2 votes

Abstentions = 2

For the next meeting we need to look at the size of the PPC group, length of time to serve on it, date for proposed changes and should the representation from groups be weighted for the size of the group.

An AGM will be arranged for early in the New Year to give feedback to the parish about our role and discuss the renewal of the PPC members as in proposal (1).

AOB

(MD) The church car park needs lighting, as it is difficult to see around it after the evening mass. This will be passed onto the development group.

(PM) The space in the church car park needs to be left clear for the frail elderly people who are given lifts to Mass. He asked if a plea could be given out at Mass to ask more able bodied people not to park there. (FG) will deal with this.

The meeting was closed with a prayer

Date of next meeting. Wednesday 8th December at 8pm in the presbytery meeting room.
